Mead Making at Tyler’s Hobbies
Welcome to the sticky, bubbly world of mead making—one of my favorite hands-on hobbies. Whether it’s traditional, spicy, or packed with fruit, I love experimenting with flavors and watching simple ingredients transform into Viking-worthy beverages. This page is where I share my process, tools, and tips for home fermentation.

🛠 Mead Making Gear & Accessories
Everything I use (and recommend) for turning honey into something magical—and slightly bubbly. Whether you're just starting out or five gallons deep, here's the gear that gets the job done.
🍯 Fermentation Vessels & Accessories
2 Pack 1-Gallon Fermentation Jar Set (with airlocks & lids)
These are the MVPs of mead making. Perfect size for beginners or test batches, and the included airlocks let CO₂ out without letting weird stuff in.
Fermentation Weights
Keeps your fruit from floating to the top and going funky. Nobody likes a moldy mango.
Swing Top Bottles
Once your mead is ready, you’ll need a home for it. These reusable bottles are sturdy, seal tight, and make you look like you know what you’re doing.
Siphoning Kit – With Bottling Wand
This is the siphoning kit I use when I don’t feel like turning bottling day into a sticky disaster. The auto siphon gets things flowing fast, the food-grade hose keeps everything clean, and the bottling wand gives you way more control when filling bottles (no more overflows!). Perfect for mead, wine, beer, or whatever else you’ve got brewing.
🧬 Yeast & Nutrients (Fermentation Additives)
Lalvin EC-1118 Wine Yeast
My go-to yeast. It's reliable, has a high alcohol tolerance, and basically says “I got this” to every batch.
Fermaid O Yeast Nutrient
Gives your yeast a little pep talk before fermentation kicks off. Helps with strong starts and fewer stuck ferments.
🥄 Mixing & Prep Tools
Immersion Blender
No more arm workouts trying to dissolve honey. Blend that must like a boss.
Digital Kitchen Scale
Measure your honey, fruit, and chaos precisely. Every gram matters.
Fine Mesh Strainers
Keeps your final pour clean. No one wants surprise pulp.
Empty Tea Bags (mesh infuser bags)
Toss your herbs, spices, or hops in these and pull them out easily later. Great for experimenting.
🧼 Sanitization Supplies
Brewing Sanitizer (e.g. Star San)
Sanitize everything. Seriously. This stuff keeps your gear clean and your mead from turning into science experiments.
Spray Bottle
Fill with sanitizer for quick sprays on tools, lids, counters—whatever your sticky hands touch.
🔬 Measuring & Monitoring
Hydrometer Test Kit
Checks your gravity before and after fermentation. Helps you calculate ABV and track when it’s done.
Turkey Baster
Easiest way to pull samples without disturbing the batch. Also, surprisingly fun to use.
Disposable Pipettes
For those micro-taste tests or sharing a thimble’s worth with curious friends.
🎁 Want to Keep it Simple?
All-in-One Mead Making Kit
If you're just dipping your toes into the world of mead, Or looking for the perfect gift for someone wanting to get started. This starter kit has what you need. Try it before going full mad scientist.
What I Make: It is always changing as I love to experiment with all the fun flavor combinations I can think of. Check my tiktok for the most up to date brews. Here’s a taste of some meads I’ve brewed recently:
-
Pineapple Jalapeño – Spicy, sweet, and surprisingly balanced.
-
Lemonade Ginger – Clean and zesty with a bite.
-
Peach Apricot – Fruit-forward and easy-drinking.
-
Traditional (Mexican Honey) – Simple, elegant, and lets the honey shine.
-
PB&J Mead – A bit experimental… and more bitter than a sandwich.
Each batch is a little different, and that’s part of the fun.
Why I Love It
Mead making blends science, creativity, and a little chaos. It’s hands-on, rewarding, and surprisingly relaxing (once the sticky cleanup is over). If you're thinking about starting your own batch, dive in—I'll be sharing recipes, updates, and probably a few fermentation fails too.
